Hammill & Gillespie was established in 1848 by James P. Hammill (in what is now Manhattan's historic South Street Seaport) as an importer of Bath Brick, a low-fired material from England, used for polishing metal. Joined in 1871 by Frederick R. Gillespie, the product line expanded to ceramics and other industrial applications. In this century, the business has steadily expanded to become a widely-admired supplier of clays and mineral products to American and international industry, with customers and suppliers on five continents.

Our specialty clays and non-metallic minerals have been used as fillers and binders in the abrasives industry for over 100 years. Gillespie's Kiln Furniture is Thermal Shock Resistant and Extruded with a Free-Flowing Air Design. A specialty blend of mullite and cordierite provided thermal shock resistance and suitable to cone 10 or 11. The ultra-light weight material and hollow core improves handling while providing an ultra-smooth finish for both ceramic and glass applications.
HC-11 is a synthetic calcined cordierite, non-alkali aluminosilicate that possesses a very low positive expansion coefficient. It is stable to temperatures in excess of 1300°C. HC-11 is used for making low expansion, highly refractory kiln furniture, such as setters, saggers, and car tops. The low thermal expansion (less than 1 x 10-6 / °C) of HC-11 results in ceramic shapes that withstand repeated rapid thermal cycling in fast fire kilns.A reduction in cycle time not only provides extended product life but potentially reduce in energy consumption.
